EXPRESSION DIRECTE OF SDF 18 – 19 May 2000

EDITORIAL

TELEVISION/RADIO

Militants of the SDF
Ladies and Gentlemen
Good evening !

Whatever problem arises in a nation, it is incumbent on the government of the day to provide the impetus for its solution. This is because, in all nations, it is mainly the ideas of the Party in power that invariably get translated into government policy and laws.

Interestingly, the CPDM regime has been involved in a ridiculous game of playing to the gallery with respect to the anglophone problem, which everybody knows to be a very serious problem for our country. The regime first pretended to be deaf and dumb, playing the ostrich while the problem slowly aggravated. It only half woke up from its deep slumber when anglophone activists moved to a higher gear at the close of 1999. In the confusion characteristic of a drowsy government, the regime has undertaken actions that expose it the more, as totally incapable of providing solutions to the serious problems that beset the nation.

First, the CPDM regime sent its cronies from Yaounde to the NW and SW Provinces to tell the anglophone activists that there is no anglophone problem!

Second, The Minister of Defence announced in Parliament that the CPDM hierarchy does not know what is called “the anglophone problem”!!

Third, the Minister of Communication issued a shallow and most confused document in “broken English” in the internet that revealed to the world, the danger that the CPDM poses to the integrity of our country due to its total misunderstanding of the problem and its consequent inability to provide solutions!!!

Fourth, the regime has shown through Newspaper articles and utterances on radio/television that in its confusion, it is not even listening to what the SDF is saying about the anglophone problem!!!!

We in the SDF are not surprised by all this because for the last 20 years, the CPDM regime has only brought division, tribalism and corruption to our country. In any case, let the regime know that the anglophone problem is starring it in the face.

Let us move to another issue, CERAC :

The SDF has been following closely what Mrs Chantal BIYA, Honorary President of the WCPDM and wife of the National President of the CPDM has been doing around the country with an organisation called the Circle of Friends of Cameroon (CERAC).

Founded by late Jeanne Irene BIYA, may her soul rest in peace, CERAC was an Association of wives of diplomats posted to Yaounde, so it was truly a Circle of Friends of Cameroon.

Today, it has been transformed into an Association that allows CPDM big shots to travel around the country to carry out a subtle campaign for the CPDM Party.

So what is CERAC all about?
  1. The Friends of Cameroon who donate to this Association are not known. Don’t we have the right to know our friends?

In principle, they are supposed to be non Cameroonians because a Cameroonian cannot be a friend of Cameroon! Cameroonians deserve to know the identity of these “friends” who may turn out to be those who donate in order to seek favours during the privatisation of state corporations and in other spheres of the economy!

We understand that so far the following amounts have been disbursed : Littoral 23 million francs, South 14 m. francs, North-West 12 m. francs and West 15 million francs.

  2. Like her husband, Madame has placed her effigies on clothes, calendars, you name them. This constitutes the building of a personality cult that all democrats condemn. The SDF since its inception has discouraged the use of effigies of living persons on party materials. SDF members and sympathisers will therefore naturally distance themselves from the uniforms of CERAC which carry the effigies of living persons!!
  3. When CERAC comes, the long lines of vehicles of all makes virtually all belong to the state; and the civil servants, ministers and other politicians who come around are paid from the state treasury. Who says that the “gifts” of CERAC are not also bought with tax payers’ money ?

We all remember that after the coup d’état in Côte d’Ivoire, it was discovered that Mrs Konan Bédie’s Foundation called “Fondation Avenir” was after all a huge network for the siphoning of foreign aid.

  4. The CPDM has no policy on the alleviation of poverty. The regime deliberately keeps the nation poor so that its cronies can come like fire extinguishers and display their opulence while giving the false impression that they care. We saw this with the ambulant CPDM health teams; we are seeing it now with CERAC.

These questions we are asking concerning CERAC also apply to PRESBY. They also apply to FORUM, a grouping that the Minister of Social Affairs is in the process of putting in place with the ostensible goal of taking care of the welfare of women but which the CPDM is doing everything to recuperate!!

  5. The SDF is convinced that a poor and divided nation cannot be healed by token gifts and empty words. What we urgently need is a tough policy on the alleviation of poverty which involves budgetary allocations to assist the poor both in rural and urban areas, the promotion and strengthening of the informal sector, easy access to loans by the rural and urban poor and the urgent restoration of an economic climate that favours strong and sustained economic growth.

The bottom line is that if we want to stop this biting and blowing by the CPDM regime, we need to vote them out of power.

This is why we should all take the registration of voters very seriously.

You know Banditry is crime and we are fighting it!

Electoral fraud is a serious crime too and we will fight it!!

Let’s together fight these evils that plague our nation!

Let’s together fight electoral fraud!!!

The end
