COMMUNIQUE
ANOTHER TRAGIC ACCIDENT ON SOA ROAD
On May 17, 2000, the cold hands of death for the second time snatched innocent victims on the Soa Road.
This ghastly accident on a road long known to be a death trap for teachers and students of the University of Yaounde II resulted in casualties officially said to stand at 13 dead with dozens of others seriously injured.
On this sad occasion, the SDF extends heartfelt condolences to the staff and students of the University of Yaounde II and to the bereaved families.
Responsibility for this tragic accident can be situated at three levels.
- The security forces that, instead of ensuring discipline and safety on our roads indulge in racketeering of transporters, who, as a result, violate with impunity, all traffic regulations and norms.
- The Minister of Transport who, instead of creating conditions conducive to the renewal of our road transport pool and the scrupulous respect of vehicle roadworthiness regulations, is instead interested in the profitable venture of matriculation of vehicles.
- The CPDM regime, which, after each disaster that hits our country, sheds crocodile tears and indulges in vain gesticulations without any follow-up.
It will be recalled that after the last serious accident on the Soa Road, less than twelve months ago, public opinion was unanimous that this road plied by thousands of University of Yaounde II students, is a death trap which needs urgent and immediate attention of government. Unfortunately, the moribund CPDM regime did nothing after that and seemed to have been waiting patiently for the next accident to start all over again.
Once again, the SDF condemns this characteristic negligence of the ruling CPDM which is totally overwhelmed by events and proves on a daily basis, its inability to conceive and implement policies to the extent that they have to be dictated to from abroad, as is the case with the audit of the national Hydrocarbon Company (SNH), long demanded by the SDF to no avail, but today imposed by the Bretton Woods institutions.
The SDF hopes that this second accident on Soa Road will reawaken the New Deal from their slumber so that part of the oil revenue with which they have been funding occult societies in France can be used to improve the conditions in our university institutions.
Yaounde, 18 May, 2000,
Prof. T. ASONGANYI
Secretary General.
