The Social Democratic Front (SDF) most deeply regrets to observe that, in the wake of their rally scheduled for the 26th May 1990 at 2 p.m., in Bamenda in the North West Province of Cameroon, there are unwarranted measures taken by the Government which are obviously intended to dissuade, intimidate and scare the population from the rally. The Social Democratic Front strongly protests against the setting up of road blocks at various entry points into Bamenda Town and that persons travelling to and from the town are being subjected to unnecessary searches.
Not being contented with inconveniencing travellers to and from town, there is an unduly heavy deployment of military personnel and equipment including water tanks and tear gas placed at strategic points in the town.
In addition to these obnoxious measures adopted by the Government, the "Cameroon Post newspaper which, so far, written favourably about the Social Democratic Front has been proscribed in Bamenda Town.
The SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC FRONT wishes to place on record and inform the World at large that they neither advocate nor condone any acts of indiscipline or violence. As such, they fail to see reason in these irrational measures which are especially in a section of the Country which is unaccustomed to these outmoded colonial tactics. We call on the Cameroon Government to desist from these blatant violations of the basic human rights of Cameroonians.
Recently, the Social Democratic Front has received letters from Mr Magloire NGUIAMBA, Governor of the North West Province in Bamenda which are all threatening in tone. Following these letters, the Social Democratic Front has been compelled to write to the Honourable Minister of Territorial Administration on the subject.
Done at Bamenda, May 22, 1990
