WE the people of the Federal Republic of Cameroon;
CONSCIOUS of our duty before God, the Creator and man;
DETERMINED to secure for ourselves and posterity the inalienable rights with which the Creator has endowed every human being;
COGNIZANT of our multi-ethnic diversity, and bicultural, bilingual and bi-jural heritage from the two founding entities of our country a consequence of our historical colonial contacts;
BELIEVING that in spite of these diversities and divergent influences we can best secure common defense, progress, development and human dignity through the establishment of good government, the guarantor of freedom, equality, fraternity, peaceful coexistence, social justice, solidarity and happiness;
CONVINCED that human welfare and the rights of citizens are best secured, preserved and defended in a democratic society in which the governed are responsible and accountable to the electorate;
COMMITTED to the establishment of a participatory democracy and a transparent government which derives its legitimacy from the consent and trust of the governed;
AFFIRMING our commitment to African unity and solidarity through cooperation and development and World Peace through the promotion of democratic principles, human rights and human dignity;
In order to form a Republican Democracy and Secular State,
DO HEREBY MAKE, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES AND POSTERITY THIS CONSTITUTION FOUNDED ON THE VIRTUES OF THE SEPARATION OF POWERS AND WHICH GUARANTEES REGIONAL AUTONOMY IN POLITICAL AND FINANCIAL MATTERS AND THE RULE OF LAW.
