MANIFESTO OF THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC FRONT
FOREWORD
It is common knowledge that Cameroonians continue to be misinformed, abused, deceived, impoverished, treated as immature and taken for granted by a callous and rapacious one party political oligarchy. The Social Democratic Front (SDF) is determined, come what may, to change for good this unwholesome situation and usher in a new, healthy, bright and democratic era in this Country.
There must be political renaissance in Cameroon. The yearnings of all human beings are the same: freedom and good life. Any form of government that is inconsistent with the pursuit of happiness, the rule of law, and the enjoyment of liberty does grave violence to the legitimate aspirations and the sovereign will of the people. Such a government cannot possibly justify its existence. It is self-delusion to pretend that Cameroon is an island. The die is cast. And Cameroon must rise to the challenge of the hour.
Destiny now calls loud and clear. It calls us to assert our collective will and shake off the slavish and fearful state to which we have been so pitifully reduced by an insidious autocracy. The Social Democracy Front, created in answer to the call of Conscience, History and Destiny, holds out the prospect of true democracy and a bright and humane future for this country. One of the problems of Cameroon in its experiment at constitutionalism has been the arrogance and impunity with which those in power have manipulated or modified the Constitution. The net result has been a complete disregard of the sovereignty of the Cameroonian people. We cannot continue in this manner for ever.
Recent events in the past weeks in Cameroon, as evidenced in the form which demonstrations and/or manifestations were organised against the emergence of the SDF, have brought into proper focus what the SDF Manifesto seeks to resolve with the peoples of this great Nation.
The question of a multiparty system was settled by the Cameroonian people in their infinite wisdom once and for all by the Constitution of 2nd June and Law No 67/LF/19 of 12 June 1967. The law does not require any prior authorisation from Government to form a political party. Accordingly, the recent misguided demonstrations and/or manifestations characteristically confused many issues. The conduct tantamounts to a blatant violation of the Constitution. The One Party System has demonstrably failed either as a guarantee of basic human rights or an effective means of good government. The system breeds tyranny, corruption, indolence, fear, confusion and perpetuates an oligarchy, and deprives the people of a true and effective say in their own governance.
This Manifesto sets out for the years that lie ahead objectives which we are determined to achieve.
