Opposition MP Criticises Biya's Attitude Panafrican News Agency (Dakar) April 24, 2001: Douala, Cameroon Posted to the web April 24, 2001 Vice-chairman of Cameroon's main opposition party, the Social Democratic Front has criticised President Paul Biya for a "wait and see attitude" by his government concerning ratification of the Consultative Act of the African Union. Cameroon, which is among the last batch of countries to have signed the Union's constitutive act, is among the 16 States that have not ratified it by 19 April. "We don't know why the Biya Government is still hesitant to move on the same pace as its other African counterparts," Saïdou Maïdadi Yaya told PANA in Douala. "Presidents like Senegal's Abdoulaye Wade have even written a book on African unity", the opposition MP said. "As far as our party is concerned, it has always defended the ideal of an African union such as advocated by Colonel Moammar Kadhafi," the SDF leader said. He said they would sensitise Cameroonians on the union project through radio and television broadcasts in the weeks ahead. Copyright © 2001 Panafrican News Agency.
