SDF Leader authorised to broaden coalition

The National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held over the weekend in Bamenda.

The National Executive Committee, (NEC) the ruling organ of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), met in the party headquarters of Bamenda last Saturday, to discuss matters affecting the party. Presided at by the SDF National Chairman, Ni John Fru Ndi, the meeting was extended to members the Advisory Council, MPs and Mayors of councils managed by the SDF.

Talking to the press at the end of the marathon session that lasted more than eight hours, the party’s communication officers, Martin Nkemngu and Beatrice Annembom Monju said that, the participants discussed issues related to the 2004 presidential elections. They said, the SDF was seriously worried that registration for the elections was not going on as required by law. Referring to past elections, NEC blamed administrators for "virtually refusing to work with the electoral commissions" as provided in the electoral code.

The NEC meeting also reflected on the recently created alliance signed between the SDF and the Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU), in which the two parties committed to work together for the 2004 presidential elections. The decision to present a unique candidate at the election was approved by the NEC which requested that steps be taken to broaden the coalition for other progressive political parties to join the ranks. "The Secretary general, Tazoacha Asonganyi further informed the NEC of the visit of a delegation of the Commonwealth to discuss ways and means of rendering the electoral process in Cameroon more democratic, fair and transparent.

The NEC, Mr Nkemngu said, resolved to intensify efforts and contacts with national and international organisations to ensure the organisation of free and fair elections which they described as "very crucial" in the life of Cameroon.

During the meeting, the provincial chairpersons gave detail reports of the state of the party in the ten provinces. The NEC recommended that they should do everything to educate grassroots militants on the need to enrol on the electoral register. Financial reports for the 1999 and 2001 SDF Conventions were also presented by Messrs Lucas Tasi Ntang and Nchotu. It was debated and approved by the NEC. The party further reviewed international political situations such as the coup d’Etat in Guinea Bissau and the conflict between the government and rebels in Côte d’Ivoire. It condemned the re-occurrence of coups in Africa.

Next NEC meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2003, in Bamenda.
