SDF Council Delivers on an Ultra-Modern Market to Kumbo People as Ruling Party Snubs France

An ultra-modern market covering 3 hectares was inaugurated in Kumbo, 120Km North of Bamenda, the Provincial capital of North-West Province June 17, 2003. The ceremony was presided over by Marie Boulay, a French diplomat, representing the French Ambassador to Cameroon. The project was sponsored by the French government, through the France’s Mission for Development Cooperation with a contribution of 30% by the Kumbo Urban Council.

The CFA 157 million Francs market has 144 lock stalls, food market, a car park, an open area for hawkers, 3 warehouses, 4 lock-up pounds for animals, offices and a meat slab. It is located in Njavnyuy not far from Tobin, the administrative neighbourhood of Kumbo.

During the inauguration, SDF Party Chairman John Fru Ndi, while appreciating the French for sponsoring the project, called on them to do more to support development. The SDF Mayor of Kumbo Urban Council Njong Donatus Fonyuy expressed gratitude to the French government for funding the project. The market project is an example of the determination of SDF to improve upon the quality of life of ordinary people with the limited power and resources the Party has at its disposal.

The occasion was attended by the population of Kumbo, Mayors of SDF run Councils, as well as Mayors of the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC) Party. Fon Mbinglo (Natural Ruler) of Nso boycotted the occasion reportedly on the pretext that the Kumbo Urban Council has declined to pay the electricity bills for his Palace.

Paradoxically the ceremony was also boycotted by members of President Paul Biya’s ruling Cameroon Peoples Democratic Movement (CPDM) Party. The boycott by the Fon and the ruling Party has been described as one of the meanest anti-people acts posed by rulers in Kumbo in recent times. The local Party apparatchiks wouldn’t do this without the blessing of the Chairman of the CPDM and President of Cameroon Paul Biya. Observers say it is a monumental diplomatic blunder for the ruling Party to snub France. It should be recalled that CPDM barons blocked funding for the tarring of the dilapidated roads in Kumbo because this was initiated by an SDF Mayor! No wonder the CPDM have been severely punished by the voters in the past four successive elections in Kumbo.
